Houchin is accused of murdering Dana Mackay in James City County,
Virginia. The case is odd on a few
respects. Dana Mackay’s body was found
in her home, beaten to death, with one of her fingers cut off (why just one?) As reported by WTKR, according
to court documents, police found a handwritten note in Houchin’s wallet confessing
to the murder.
Allegedly,
Houchin’s wife was having an affair with Dana Mackay’s (the murdered woman’s)
husband, John. Both Houchin and John Mackay
were soldiers. Apparently, instead of
killing his own wife or John Mackay, the ones who were conducting the affair,
prosecutors allege that Houchin decided to kill John’s wife (apparently, the
theory goes, to show John what it felt like).
Apparently, Houchin didn’t consider that Dana Mackay was feeling the
same thing he was because her husband was cheating on her, which makes him
either a complete idiot, or the makes the motive fall apart.
WKTR
interviewed him behind bars and Houchin denied committing the crime and “wasn’t
even there.” The confession note which
was allegedly in his wallet will be some interesting evidence, if it is in his
handwriting, and can be verified. Maybe
his defense will claim that it was John who wrote the note and killed his own
wife, and tried to pin it on Houchin.
Who knows? I’m speculating because
the details are so spare, but the roles so reversed.
I’ll
try to keep up with the story and report what the trial concludes. It’s an interesting conundrum of motives and
wrongly aligned relationships.
