In
the list of things not to bring to court, tops on the list are pistols (though
I saw a lawyer bring one to court once in his briefcase, and it went badly for him). Second on the list is probably a meth
pipe. Especially if you’re facing a
bail hearing – that day – for possession of meth.
Nothing like bringing in evidence against yourself. I guess if there was a subpoena for evidence,
this would have complied. There is the
Fifth Amendment and everything. But,
like most lawyers know, just because you have the right to remain silent, doesn’t
mean you have the ability. Apparently
same goes for evidence of meth.
Steven
Todd Campbell of Cowlitz County, Washington was out on bail on charges for possession of meth. When Campbell came to court on the charge, he
faced a metal detector. Instead of
turning around and perhaps putting his meth pipe back in the car, he put it in the
bin, where deputies recognized it. He at
least tried to cover it with paper. It didn’t
work. He got arrested and went back to
jail, likely as a violation of his prior bail, and with a new charge. Meth is a powerful drug. Stupidity is a
powerful force in the war on crime.
