How low can you go? Armed Robbery of a 90 year-old man outside
his church is pretty low. The Star Tribune reports that Howard Kidder has been going
to Mounds Park United Methodist Church in the East Side of St. Paul for 78
years. He’s also been around the world
on medical aid missions. He ran the Boy
Scout troop at the church for years. He
delivers meals and flowers to fellow seniors.
This is the guy that three thugs decided to rob.
One guy in a Halloween mask
demanded money from Kidder. Kidder gave
him a five-dollar bill. The guy raised
his shirt and showed the butt of a gun.
Kidder, smartly, threw down the wallet and backed up. The gunman and two
guys standing nearby, without masks, ran away with his wallet, cash and credit
cards.
No one’s been arrested. No one was hurt. Kidder seems to be in decent spirits, still
bringing flowers to friends near the church.
Kidder said, “I was disturbed by
it … but I just happened to be a convenient victim,” Kidder said. “It’s a nice
neighborhood. It really is.”
Criminals prey on those they
perceive to be weak. A ninety-year old
man is an obvious target. Kidder was
smart to give up his billfold and money.
He knew his life, and the good he continues to do in the world weren’t
worth the contents. This is the story of
a truly lowdown criminal and a good man who won’t be swayed. I bet if the guy had just asked Kidder or the
church for some help, he would have given it, with the gun unnecessary.
