Sinaloa Cartel Drug Lord Arrested for 350 Murders

A suspected lieutenant in the Sinaloa cartel, allegedly behind the mass murders of 350 rival Juarez cartel murders has been arrested in Mexico.  Mario Nunez is accused of being the second highest ranking member of the Sinaloa cartel, allegedly run by Mexico’s most wanted man, Joaquin Guzman. (Full story)

Nunez is a former police officer. He’s suspected of being behind the mass murders of 350 people who were found in 23 mass graves in Durango State.  He is facing forty years in prison, which seems pretty light punishment.  He’s also wanted in the US on drug trafficking charges.

Nunez started working for the Juarez cartel before switching to the Sinaloa cartel.  Nunez was allegedly hired by Guzman to take over the Juarez cartel’s drug smuggling routes from the Juarez cartel.   The Sinaloa cartel, which gets less press in this part of the country than the Zetas, are considered at least as violent and more powerful.
