Phoenix Man Confesses to Killing Son with Ax

While Florida has the undisputed title of most represented State on this blog, it is mainly due to the ineptitude of its criminals and the combined hilarity and nefariousness of its wildlife.  Arizona, on the other hand, is making a run at the undisputed title of most heinous crimes.  Arizona had the man who went completely crazy and berserk and tried to kill all of his neighbors due to barking dogs (and was successful in killing a lot of them).

Now a story has come out of Phoenix that is horrifying.  According to ABC15 in Phoenix,  a local man has confessed to killing his own son with an ax on New Year’s Eve.  According to Phoenix police, 51 year-old Gary Sherrill shared custody of his son with his ex-wife.  He had the 13 year-old boy on New Year’s and didn’t return him.  The boy’s mother called police to report that her son wasn’t brought back.

When officers arrived on scene, Sherrill told them his son was not home. Officers asked more questions and the suspect allowed officers into his home, Martos said.

When police entered the home, they found the boy already dead. Martos said the victim had stab wounds and lacerations to several parts of his body.

Martos said Sherrill confessed to killing his son with an ax and told officials he was scared of his son. He told police he believed his son was a demon and was going to eat him.

Apparently his insane behavior was not isolated to this one incident. ABC 15 also quoted a neighbor who said that “He had been screaming at a tree the other day.”

I don’t know how much crazy it takes to start screaming at a tree, but it is likely a lot.  I don’t know why the neighbors wouldn’t report this to police, except that they were likely scared of him, or just didn’t want to get involved.  Most people just don’t want to get involved.  When the state of mental health services is as poor as it is in this country, and neighbors don’t get involved when they witness obviously crazy behavior, and know that this man has a son, bad things are bound to happen.  The neighbors aren’t to blame for this tragedy, obviously.  They didn’t wield the ax.  But people, call the police before the ax murder happens. Call the police the neighbor starts yelling at the tree so he can get some help.  There are signs. There are always signs.

Now, Sherill is in jail facing first degree murder charges, an insanity defense, and a son who is dead.
