Drug War Continues in Southwestern Mexico: Five Headless Bodies Found in Michoacán

Brietbart.com reports that authorities in Michoacán state, in southwestern Mexico, have found five headless bodies on a bridge’s traffic circle in a suburb of Morelia, the state’s capital. An hour later, two more were found in a Morelia public square, with the heads on the sidewalk a little further away.

A letter signed with the initials of the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel were found with all the bodies.  The bodies are believed to be members of the Knights Templar cartel, which had, until recently, had de facto control of the state.

The Jalisco New Generation drug cartel is from the next state over.   Loyal readers may recall our posts on the ongoing war for the soul of Michoacán state.  The Knights Templar had effective control of Michoacán, wresting it back from the Mexican government.  The Knights Templar were the remnants of the former cartel La Familia Michoacán, which was the first target of former Mexican president Vincente Fox’s drug war.  The population of Michoacán has been fighting back, forming civil defense groups, their own jails and courts, since the state seemingly wouldn’t do anything.
The federal government took note and took back the port after it was found that the Knights Templar had taken over the country’s second biggest port and were making money exporting natural resources, as well as drugs.

The constant state and citizen pressure on the Knights Templar seems to have created a power vacuum in the drug trade, which now may be being exploited by a new gang.  Hopefully the Citizens Defense Groups and state will stamp the Jalisco New Generation before they can get a foothold.
