Man Charged in Murder of Northern California Priest

In a story that is as brief as it is disturbing, authorities in the Northern California town of Eureka say a popular priest was found dead in the rectory of the church, and a murder investigation has been started.

AP reports that Gary Lee Bullock is charged with breaking into the church rectory and beating the Rev. Eric Freed with a wooden stake and rusty metal pipe before making two unsuccessful attempts to burn the body and burn down the church.

No motive was given in the charging documents for Bullock’s alleged slaying of Rev. Freed.  Police have surveillance video of Bullock climbing into the rectory with the stake and pipe.  A security guard saw Bullock outside the church around the time of the murder and sent him on his way. Bullock has pleaded not guilty.  There is a special charge of torture and arson.

The AP report, when going through all the things that Bullock did to try to burn up the priest and burn down the church, points out what Bullock did wrong, and what he should have done to effectively burn up the priest and church.  I will not repeat those here and am frankly dumbfounded at why AP would have gratuitously provided such information.

Apparently Bullock had been jailed a few hours earlier for public intoxication, but when confronted outside the church, was sober, but not in a normal mental state. That is an understatement.  Whoever killed Rev. Freed, if it was Bullock, committed a horrific crime with no given motive aside from pure evil itself becoming manifest.
