English Man Calls in Bomb Threat to Try to Distract Fiance from Fact that He Didn’t Fill Out Marriage Paperwork

An English man, Neil McArdle, age 36 and too old for this kind of mess, took a potentially embarrassing situation and hard talk with his fiancé, in-laws and guests, and got himself a year in prison.  The expectant groom had apparently not checked the paperwork to get legally married and had not properly booked the wedding hall. He apparently realized this the night before the wedding.  He got up early, apparently intending to tell his fiancé, but fretted because “the wedding was all she talked about.”  So, instead of telling her, he came up with a cunning plan:  he’d call in a bomb threat to the wedding hall, and all weddings would be called off for the day, then he’d rebook in time to get the paperwork done on time.

McArdle: Dude who chose prison over telling fiance the truth
He did call in the bomb threat.  All hell broke loose.  People were evacuated. The police came. They checked the building, and the all-clear was given.  Then the staff tried to help the couple out by setting up the “delayed” wedding only to look at the books and realize that the couple wasn’t on the books.  The in-laws suspected him, and the fiance’s sister said, “You probably done the bomb scare yourself.”  Sounds like Christmas with the in-laws was already going to be awesome before, more awesome now.

The police being the police also quickly traced the call to McArdle and arrested him. He professed to shame and embarrassment being his motive.  The judge believed him, but didn’t care, throwing him in jail for a year (which seems fair).

The fiancé is standing by him for now.  But, a year is a long time, and McArdle sounds pretty pitiful. A year is plenty of time for her sister to get in her ear about how no-account a husband he would be to not fill out the paperwork, not tell her, then call in a bomb threat.  Makes you wonder what else he’d lie about and what other lengths he’d go to to cover up his lies. Doesn’t sound like good marriage material to me.
