Among
readers of this blog, the competition between Oklahoma, Louisiana and Florida
for top state represented on this blog is well known. Less well-known – and until now virtually
unchallenged – is the competition for biggest animal scourge. Drunken feral hogs are our spirit animal
(hat-tip to Matt Sawicki), and easily trounce the scourge of bears put forward
by Stephen Colbert. Now, they have
massive competition, at least in coastal states.
In
New Smyrna Beach, Florida this weekend, beach-goers saw a surfing
rattlesnake. I crap you negative. Rattlesnakes are surfing in Florida.
As
reported by a Floridian: Valeh Levy shot video Friday New Smyrna Beach but said her son was one
of the first surfers to spot the snake in the waves.
"My son came running up toward my minivan and he said, 'Mommy, you're not going to believe this but there's a rattlesnake in the surf,'" Levy said.
Witnesses estimate it was 4-5 feet long and came onto the beach from the ocean. Levy said her son described how surfers tried to avoid the snake swimming right by them.

As reportedly said by her young
son, a future all-star Floridian: "He said the coolest part was that the
snake raised half of its body up and looked out towards the surf and a wave was
coming and the snake turned towards the beach and kind of let the wave bump it
on in," Levy said.
That is not cool, son. That is
not cool at all.
So-called experts said “rattlesnake
bites are rare and the one spotted was not aggressive and was only trying to go
back to the dunes, its home. So-called experts may have never faced an
aggressive rattlesnake in their backyard artichoke patch as a young child, as
the author did before said author chopped it up with a garden hoe.
Rattlesnakes make good
boots. They do not make good surfers.
