The Houston Chronicle reports that a suspect in the series of rapes in
South Dallas his summer has been arrested in Louisiana. Van Dixson, a
crime-watch volunteer, was arrested in Baton Rouge two days after his car was
found abandoned in a Dallas suburb.
Police say DNA evidence has linked Dixson to four sexual assaults in
Dallas’ Fair Park neighborhood where police believe that one man committed
rapes this summer. In each case the man was armed with a handgun, forced his
victims to secluded areas and then robbed and sexually assaulted them.

The Chronicle reports: Dixson was charged with rape in the early
1990s, before he spent more than a decade in prison for a robbery conviction,
but that charge was dropped after his accuser was killed by a lightning strike.
The prosecutor in that case said the alleged victim reported being held at
gunpoint.
Neighbors reported that Dixson would
patrol the neighborhood all the time.
They didn’t know that he had a criminal history, including serving more
than ten years for a 1993 aggravated robbery charge in 1993. There is talk about running background checks
on neighborhood watch members run out of the community association. Seems like a good idea.
