Protip: When Fleeing Florida Double Murder with Teenage Girlfriend, Stop for Gas

Maybe folks from Florida and South Carolina are accustomed to gas stations at regular intervals and have no concept of how spread apart towns in the west in general, and Wyoming in particular are.  Maps help.  So does general planning.  That apparently escaped Steven Tompkins, age 24, who was arrested 65 miles north of Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Tomkins and Luck, after running out of gas

According to The State.com, Tomkins faces extradition on two counts of second-degree murder, of Shelly Tompkins, (his mother), and Daniel Tompkins (his brother).  They were found in their home outside Fort Myers.  Tomkins was caught with Joycelin Luck, 19, of South Carolina, who was reported missing by her mother.  Authorities believe she had full knowledge of the murders.

Tomkins and Luck were arrested when police came across their stolen truck, with South Carolina tags, that had run out of gas on the side of the road.  Backup was called when the truck was identified as stolen (and just sitting on the side of the road, going nowhere, with two people in it, so a leisurely check of the plate could be done, and backup could come without the necessity of setting up roadblocks and such).

So, here’s tip one: don’t kill your family. Seriously, don’t.  Just move away.  Things get better.  Two, don’t run out of gas if you’re fleeing in a stolen truck.
